Hikes 2005 Galleries

Cold Mountian, NC (12-10-05) : A great hike I took in early December 2005. If you are wondering, yes, this is "the" Cold Mountain. It was made famous in the bestselling novel by Charles Frazier and later the hollywood movie. This hike climbs almost 3000 feet from Camp Daniel Boone to the summit at 6030'.

Black Balsam Knob / Shining Rock Wilderness, NC (10-23-05) : This hike has my vote for the premier hike in North Carolina. The Art Loeb Trail leads from the Black Balsam Mountain parking area over 4 peaks above 6000 feet to Shining Rock Mountain. This is one of the largest areas of open bald in the NC mountains.

Isle Royale National Park, MI (July 2005) : This is the hike I had been dreaming of my whole life. I hope these albums capture in some way the beauty of this unique place and the love that I quickly developed for it. The seven day hike took us around the eastern half of the island from Rock Harbor out to McCargoe Cove and back...and a bunch of interesting places in between.

Mt. LeConte, TN (7-14-05) : One of my favorite hikes in the Southern Appalachians. I left on a foggy July morning to beat the crowds. Unfortunately, the skies didn't clear as much as I hoped. This is a 12 mile round-tripper that gains over 2500 feet of elevation. Enjoy!!

Hogback Mountain, MI (January 2005) : Hogback Mountain is a small rocky peak amongst the Huron Mountains north of Marquette. It was one of my favorite dayhikes during my years in nearby Negaunee. The trail begins off County Road 550 just north of the Sugarloaf Mountian parking area. The 3-mile roundtrip passes some of the areas finest scenery. Come on along...
